> Autumn 2011

The exciting “Pirate” days have proved a great success as have other half day workshops such as “Toys through Time”, “Treasure” and “Weapons and Warfare”. Financial constraints mean it is becoming even harder for schools to hire a coach and visit a museum or attraction, and the demand for our days has never been higher.

Pupils have access to various ways of learning. They handle the everyday artefacts of the period, and learn how they were used. Activities such as indoor and outdoor games, music, dance and crafts help the pupils understanding of the period.

The last academic year was our busiest and most successful. Over the summer we are developing 'Pirate' days and acquiring new pirate artefacts.
2012 sees the Olympics come to the UK and already our Greek bookings are setting a new Olympic record. We hope to see you over the course of the year.


> New Egyptian Artefacts!

In early April we took delivery of a large collection of excellent quality Egyptian artefacts. There are handling pieces for the pupils as well as royal regalia and armour. The collection of axes and maces are particularly outstanding.


> Interviews and Roman Army Talk Conference

Recently John has been interviewed by the Daily Telegraph and FHM magazine for advice and expertise on the Romans and cavalry re-enactment.
In February 2011 he has also organised the international 'Roman Army Talk' Conference in York, looking at Roman miltary equipment. Speakers included Dr J Coulston, M C Bishop and Graham Sumner.


> Filming with the Yorkshire Museum

In late October 2010 the York Museums Trust undertook some filming to highlight Roman York. John organised some equipment to represent the different periods of Roman occupation in York, and acted as a ”talking head”. The film is intended to be shown in the Yorkshire Museum.


> Roamin' Romans with York Schools

On the 29th September in the rain John lead around 80 children, many dressed as Romans, on their bikes as part of York's second annual car free day. The aim of the scheme, put forward by City of York Council, was to show motorists there were cheaper, easier more environmentally friendly and healthier alternatives to using a car.

The 'Roamin' Roman' legion was made up of schoolchildren from English Martyrs', Poppleton, Ousebank, Fishergate and St Barnabas Primary Schools.

> Artefact Handling Sessions

In addition to the standard days, our artefact handling sessions are proving very popular. These include a session on toys and their development through time.

They provide children with a hands on learning experience, using artefacts of the highest quality. As well as games and toys, yet more examples of Greek and medieval military equipment have arrived.
